One of the highlights of the last quadrennial evaluation was the result that PPG BAIP obtained in its report, in the efforts to develop its social insertion, achieving a maximum score in all items. The association between the empirical knowledge of traditional Amazonian peoples, such as indigenous, riparian, remaining quilombolas and immigrants, plus academic scientific knowledge, is a primordial factor for the development and strengthening of science in the Amazon. Therefore, measures to combat the transmission of infectious and parasitic agents, which are of interest in the CBIII area, should be associated with the ethnological aspects of a population that favors the maintenance of cycles of infection and parasitism.
Integration with the Basic Education
Discussing the social role of PPG BAIP, it was possible to perceive the gap between the high level of scientific knowledge generated by PPG BAIP and the student reality outside the walls of the University.
It was thought to make the PPG BAIP as a concrete possibility in the path of professional training, is that incisive methods of action in Basic Education were developed, especially high school students, with the purpose of stimulating the students in the continuity of the studies, aiming at the complete formation contributing to the positive social impact in the Northern Region of Brazil.
At present, it is compulsory to train the students of the Master's course in the elaboration and execution of scientific fairs and workshops, targeting middle school students, mainly public schools, as well as for Doctorate students who will develop courses in the areas of the Program, targeting undergraduate students.
It is expected to sensitize the students of the Program to the real social value they represent to society, and in this way, continue to contribute to the growth and strengthening of the Amazon communities or the most distant places, where the graduates of PPG BAIP arrive.
In this sense, since 2010, the effective participation of PPGBAIP Students and Professors in the Igarape-miri-PA Science and Technology Fair (FEICIT) has been outstanding. This fair is destined for students from pre-school to higher level, of the educational institutions installed in the municipality of Igarapé-Miri. Annually, PPG BAIP exhibits a stand with information about issues of importance to the community, with the participation of students of the Program as advisors, co-advisors, exhibitors, support, monitors and project coordinators.
Sustainability of Communities in the Marajó Archipelago
With the objective of detailing the impact of plant and animal health on communities in the Marajó archipelago, located in Pará, the Program developed a research project involving researchers from several areas. The proposal is to use state-of-the-art technologies available in the proposing institutions for the areas of sanity, biodiversity, sustainability, food safety and parasite taxonomy, in a series of experiments in the field, distributed in the geographical areas of Marajó. The largest beneficiaries will be the local communities, represented by 16 municipalities in the Region. Undergraduate and postgraduate students will also benefit, as well as the vast animal population. It is also intended to obtain a model for the use of natural resources, which will be discussed with local and regional leaders, aiming at a better coexistence between man and his environment.
